Chalk figures were common place in the 1940s and were still around and fairly plentiful in the 1950s. They were seen and sold most often on the side of highways and also at carnivals. This red collie was purchased in the 1940s along side the highway while on a vacation trip. Some of the red paint has chipped off but most is still intact which is pretty remarkable considering it was used as a door stop for at least fifty years.
